
If your heating or cooling system is getting old, you have more choices than you did a decade ago. A straight furnace swap is no longer the only sensible move. Heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, and dual-fuel setups have changed what a smart upgrade looks like for a Fraser Valley home.
The short version: for most homes in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and Langley, a cold-climate heat pump is now the default upgrade because one system covers both heating and cooling and qualifies for the largest rebates. But it is not the only right answer, and the best path depends on your home, not a general rule.

There are five common ways to upgrade a residential HVAC system in the Fraser Valley. Most homeowners land on one of these.
Cold-climate heat pump - one system for heating and cooling, rated to -25°C, eligible for up to $11,000 in rebates. The strongest all-around upgrade for most homes.
High-efficiency gas furnace - a modern furnace (up to 96% AFUE) if you are staying on gas and already have working central air or do not need cooling.
Central air conditioning - added cooling for a home that already has a furnace and ductwork but no AC.
Ductless mini-split - a heat pump that needs no ductwork, ideal for older homes, additions, and room-by-room zoning.
Dual-fuel system - a heat pump paired with your existing gas furnace, so each runs when it is most efficient.

Heat pump: the default for most homes
A heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel, and it runs in reverse to cool your home in summer. That means one piece of equipment does the job a furnace and an air conditioner used to split between them.
For a Fraser Valley home, a properly sized cold-climate heat pump handles a normal winter without falling behind, cuts heating costs 30 to 50% compared to baseboards or oil, and carries the biggest rebate stack in the province. If you are coming off electric baseboards or an old oil system, this is usually the clear winner.

High-efficiency furnace: when it still makes sense
A modern gas furnace is still a solid choice in specific cases. It makes sense when:
Your electrical panel cannot support a heat pump and a service upgrade is not feasible right now.
You already have working central air and only the furnace has failed.
The home is heated rarely, like a seasonal cabin used a few weekends a year.

Central AC: cooling for a home that already heats fine
If your furnace is newer and working, but summers have become unbearable, adding central air conditioning is the targeted fix. It bolts onto your existing ductwork and furnace blower.
That said, if your furnace is also near the end of its life, adding a standalone AC is often the wrong moment. Replacing both a failing furnace and adding cooling usually costs more than one heat pump that does both. Ductless mini-split: the answer for homes without ducts
Not every home has ductwork, and forcing ducts into a house that was never built for them is expensive and disruptive. A ductless mini-split solves that. It is a heat pump with wall-mounted or ceiling indoor units connected to an outdoor unit, no ducts required.

Older homes with no existing ductwork
Additions, garages, and finished basements
Room-by-room zoning, so you heat and cool only the spaces you use

Dual-fuel: keeping your furnace as backup
If you already have a working gas furnace and decent ductwork, a dual-fuel system pairs a new heat pump with that furnace. A smart thermostat runs the heat pump for the mild majority of the season and hands off to the furnace during rare cold snaps. You keep the furnace as redundancy and get heat pump efficiency most of the year.
It is not the cheapest option up front, but for a home already on natural gas it is often the lowest-risk path.

The upgrade path is less about the equipment and more about your home. These are the factors that decide it.
Home age and construction - older homes may need panel or insulation work; that shapes whether ducted, ductless, or dual-fuel fits best.
Existing ductwork - good ducts favor a ducted heat pump or furnace; no ducts favor ductless.
Cooling need - if you want summer cooling, a heat pump gives you both seasons in one system.
Budget and rebates - heat pumps cost more up front but carry up to $11,000 in BC rebates and lower operating costs.
Current fuel - coming off baseboards or oil makes a heat pump an easy call; coming off a newer furnace makes dual-fuel attractive.
Comfort - a heat pump’s steady low-speed airflow holds temperature more evenly than a furnace’s blast-and-stop cycle.
